The relationship we have with our dogs is unique and invaluable.  Unconditional love in exchange for a little food, water and shelter.  Of course that is the bare minimum that our beloved dogs require.

Most of us offer them much more in exchange for their friendship.  We lavish them with premium diets, extravagant playthings, plush accommodations, and innovative activities.

One of the primary activities we share with our dogs is walking outdoors together.  One on one we use this time to relax after a stressful day or as a form of vigorous exercise for both master and companion.

The privilege of owning a dog does not come without responsibility.  The inconvenient job of cleaning up after our friends is necessary to keep our public areas clean and safe for everyone's use.  Left unattended our environment would become a health hazard for both people and other dogs.

Dogs pass parasites, bacteria, and virus particles in their stool.  For the most part only other dogs can become infected by coming into contact with agents such as these in the environment.  However, under certain circumstances, human beings can become infected with parasites or disease agents from a dog's stool.

At the very least, leaving the stool unattended in public areas is a nuisance for all who use the area.  Buildup of such material leads to strained relationships between dog owners and non-dog owners over use of common areas.  That, in turn, leads to greater restrictions and diminished areas in which we can share time with our canine friends.  In many urban areas, that space is already at a premium.

Please be a responsible pet owner and clean up after your pets.  That is just as important as providing quality food, fresh water, and adequate shelter for them.
